How this is calculated
- Buy: (exit − entry) × contract size × lots.
- Sell: (entry − exit) × contract size × lots.
- The result is in the quote currency, then converted to your account currency.
- Commission: per lot, each side × lots × 2 (open and close).
- Rebate: the rate per lot × lots, or the rate % of the spread or of the fee.
- Swap: per night swap × lots (points × 10^−digits × contract size); triple nights count 3 times.
- MQL5 Reference — ENUM_SYMBOL_CALC_MODE:

How to calculate profit and loss
Profit or loss is the price change times the size of your trade.
- Find the price change: exit minus entry for a buy, entry minus exit for a sell.
- Multiply by the contract size and by your lots.
- The result is in the quote currency. Convert it to your account currency.
Worked examples
The first example uses the calculator's example values; the others change the product and inputs. Every result comes from the calculator above.
EUR/USD on a $10,000.00 account
- Buy 1 lot, from 1.1 to 1.105.
- Multiply: 0.005 × 100,000 × 1 = $500.00.
XAU/USD on a $10,000.00 account
- Buy 0.2 lot, from 2,500 to 2,480.
- Multiply: −20 × 100 × 0.2 = −$400.00.
USD/JPY on a $10,000.00 account
- Sell 0.5 lot, from 161 to 160.
- Multiply: 1 × 100,000 × 0.5 = ¥50,000.
- In your account currency, that is about $312.50.
Common mistakes
- Swapping entry and exit on a sell. For a sell, the result is entry minus exit.
- Forgetting costs. Spread, commission and swap lower the real result.
- Using the forex contract size for gold. Check the contract size of each product.
- Counting pips, not money. The same number of pips is worth a different amount on other lot sizes or products.
How a rebate changes this
Where a rebate fits in your result
A rebate returns part of the fees you paid, from the spread or commission. It makes your costs smaller, but it does not turn a losing trade into a winning one.
Questions
Why does a sell make money when the price falls?
You sell first and buy back later. A lower buy-back price leaves a profit.
Does leverage change my profit or loss?
No. Profit and loss depend on the price, your lots and the contract size. Leverage changes the margin.
Are fees included?
No. Spread, commission and swap are not included. Your terminal shows them.
Already trading? Part of your fees can come back.
Open your account through RebateFX, and the broker pays part of your fees back to you. Your spread and fees stay the same.
