How this is calculated
  • Forex: margin = lots × contract size ÷ leverage, in the base currency.
  • We count the margin rate as 1. Your broker may use another rate.
  • Commission: per lot, each side × lots × 2 (open and close).
  • Rebate: the rate per lot × lots, or the rate % of the spread or of the fee.

Estimate only. Spread is not included, and other costs only where a line shows them. Your trading terminal shows the exact numbers. This is not investment advice. Read the risk disclosure

How to calculate margin

Margin is the part of your money the broker holds while a trade is open.

  1. Multiply your lots by the contract size. This is your trade size in the base currency.
  2. Divide by your leverage.
  3. For gold and other CFDs, also multiply by the price.
  4. Convert the result to your account currency at the current price.

Worked examples

The first example uses the calculator's example values; the others change the product and inputs. Every result comes from the calculator above.

  1. EUR/USD on a $10,000.00 account

    • 1 lot × 100,000 = 100,000 units of EUR.
    • Divide the trade value by the leverage: €100,000.00 ÷ 100 = €1,000.00.
    • In your account currency, that is about $1,100.00.
  2. XAU/USD on a $10,000.00 account

    • 0.1 lot × 100 = 10 units of XAU.
    • Divide the trade value by the leverage: $25,000.00 ÷ 200 = $125.00.
  3. USD/JPY on a $10,000.00 account

    • 0.5 lot × 100,000 = 50,000 units of USD.
    • Divide the trade value by the leverage: $50,000.00 ÷ 500 = $100.00.

Common mistakes

  • Treating margin as a cost. It is a deposit you get back when you close.
  • Thinking higher leverage makes a trade safer. It lowers the margin, not the loss.
  • Using almost all your balance as margin. A small move can then bring a margin call.
  • Forgetting that every open trade holds margin. Each new trade takes more of your free margin.

How a rebate changes this

A rebate does not lower your margin

The rebate is paid after you trade, so the margin a trade holds stays the same. It returns part of your fees, but it does not turn a losing trade into a winning one.

Questions

Is margin a fee?

No. It is a deposit held while the trade is open. You get it back when you close, minus any loss.

What does leverage mean?

It sets how large a trade your margin can open. At 1:100, margin is 1/100 of the trade size.

What are a margin call and a stop out?

A margin call warns that your margin is running low. A stop out closes trades automatically.

Already trading? Part of your fees can come back.

Open your account through RebateFX, and the broker pays part of your fees back to you. Your spread and fees stay the same.
